Northwestern University is currently working cooperatively with state higher education authorities to ensure compliance with applicable state authorization requirements that govern the offering of online courses to students residing in those states. Northwestern will continue to monitor developments in the jurisdictions in which it enrolls students, and, if authorization or licensure is or becomes necessary, it will seek to obtain approvals.
Many states do not require authorization for programs that are solely online, but among those that do, Northwestern has either obtained approval or is in the process of obtaining approval in all other states where it is required.
Institutions delivering courses by distance education are required to provide students or prospective students with contact information for filing complaints with the state approval or licensing entity in the student’s state of residency and any other relevant state official or agency that would appropriately handle a student’s complaint. For information on each state’s grievance procedures, see the State Higher Education Executive Officers’ Student Complaint Process by State.
