Practicum in Athletic Allied Health Care
The Practicum in Athletic Allied Health Care certificate program provides students with hands-on health care experiences, through rotations; traditional lecture-based learning via educational in-services; as well as allowing them to develop personal professional goals.
Students who enter the program will be assigned to a specific sport and supervisor for their clinical rotation. They will also participate in at least one summer practicum .This includes a rotation with the sports that begin their pre-season training in August. Over the course of the certificate, students will be exposed to several of the 19 sports, as clinical rotations are reassessed on a bi-annual basis. Finally, students will participate in bi-monthly in-services taught by the team physicians, athletic training staff, and team medical consultants.
Application Procedure and Eligibility
Only full-time undergraduate students may participate in this program. You may apply your first or second years only.
- October 15 – applications due
- October 15-Dec 1 – observation period

Rotations and Summer Practicum Goals
Students will be well prepared to:
- Observe sports medicine professional practices
- Identify injuries to their supervisors with assistance of medical professionals
- Assist physicians and athletic training team during practices and games
Educational In-Services Goals
Year 1: Athletic Injury Triage Techniques
- Demonstrate procedures that deal with athlete safety
- Identify sports-related injuries
- Demonstrate various triage techniques
Year 2: Anatomy and Professional Development
- Learn anatomy of sports injury-prone body areas
- Practice resume writing and interviewing for health careers
Year 3: Holistic Health Support, Rehabilitation and Capstone
- Investigate issues outside of direct physical training that impact athlete health
- Complete a capstone project
The goals of the program are tied to learning outcomes for each year’s educational in-services as well as the student rotations and summer practicum. In all cases, students are closely mentored and supervised by team physicians and staff athletic trainers that have the final and ultimate responsibility for the athletes’ health and care.
The School of Professional Studies will administer the program in conjunction with the Athletic Department. SPS will provide a noncredit certificate of completion to students who successfully complete 1) between six and nine quarters in good program status, 2) a summer practicum, and 3) annual in-services including any quizzes or demonstrations of proficiencies as well as the satisfactory presentation of the capstone project.
Clinical Rotation Details
Students who enter the program will be assigned to a specific sport and supervisor for their clinical rotation. Students will have the opportunity to be exposed to several of the 19 sports, as clinical rotations are reassessed on a bi-annual basis. The potential assignments include but are not limited to:
- Women’s basketball
- Men’s basketball
- Men’s soccer
- Women’s soccer
- Field hockey
- Women’s and Men’s tennis
- Women’s and Men’s swimming and diving
Summer Practicum Details
Students will participate in at least one summer practicum. This includes a rotation with the sports that begin their pre-season training in August. Students will be specifically exposed to pre-participation physicals and heat-illness management observation, hydration management and athletic injury management. Summer practicums include:
- Olympic Sports – rotation includes men’s and women’s soccer and field hockey
- Football – rotation includes traveling with football for pre-season camp
Educational In-Service Details
Students will participate in bi-monthly in-services taught by the team physicians, athletic training staff, and team medical consultants. In-services are 45 minute sessions that will provide the students with information and knowledge that can be integrated into their clinical rotations. The in-services are broken down into modules with a year-long theme.
