Connect — NUCPS Alumni Community

Northwestern University Center for Public Safety graduates are part of an elite group of professionals who improve public safety in communities throughout the U.S. and around the world. The NUCPS community, though, extends beyond the sum of our classes. Together, our faculty, staff, alumni, and students create a powerful community of leading public safety professionals. Our commitment to our graduates does not stop at the end of a course or program. We strive to be a life-long connection for all of our graduates, with the networking and resources only Northwestern can provide. And it all starts with staying connected.

NUCPS Graduates Promoted in Ottawa County, Michigan

SPSC Steve Kempker promotionSteve A. Kempker, Ottawa (MI) County Sheriff's Office, to Sheriff. SPSC Class #156 graduate Kempker was elected Sheriff last November and sworn in on Dec. 19, 2017. He initially joined the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office in 1989. Kempker began his law enforcement career with the city of Holland, MI. He places a great emphasis on staffing and community: "My dad always told me, 'Surround yourself with good people.' I'm a firm believer in that... [Former] Sheriff Rosema surrounded himself with good people and good staff. As I said, too, this is not my department. It's our department, it's the citizens of Ottawa County, it's their department. So it's important to have good staff."

SPSC alumna Valerie WeissValerie L. Weiss, Ottawa (MI) County Sheriff's Office, from Captain to Undersheriff. Weiss, a graduate of SPSC Class #328, has been appointed Undersheriff. She has been with Ottawa County since 1995. Weiss began her career in Coopersville, MI, as a police department reserve officer. In 2014, she was promoted to captain. Weiss is one of only three female undersheriffs in Michigan.
