RTVF 310-CN : Television History
Description
This course will be a survey of the history of radio and television in the United States. Beginning with television’s heritage in the development of radio, we will examine the emergence of broadcasting and the network system, and the ways the American television industry was established through a combination of technological, commercial, regulatory, and cultural factors. Our survey will continue through the post-network era, addressing the development of cable programming and the transition into our current era of streaming and on-demand services. Throughout the course, we will explore questions both about the boundaries of radio and television as media and about their significance in larger American society. Carries humanities credit.
