While the primary reasons for the exponential increase are easier data capture, cheaper data storage and improved computing power, it is the human element of ‘making sense’ of the data that has become the biggest challenge in recent years.

The Post Graduate* Program in Data Science, Design and Visualization aims to train students for a successful career in business analytics, across a range of functions. The hands-on program ensures end-to-end, application-oriented learning and execution of concepts essential in the industry.

Post Graduate Program in Data Science, Design and Visualization Curriculum

This certificate program, offered through a partnership between the Bridge School of Management and Northwestern University School of Professional Studies, aims to train students for a successful career in business analytics, across a range of functions. The program covers all the basics of analytics, and also provides domain-specific, application-oriented training. It is suitable for fresh undergraduates in any discipline or career changers who have little prior statistics, analytics experience, but who are comfortable working with numbers.

This program is intended for people who are working in domains like marketing and want to do more marketing analytics (up-skill) or get a job in marketing analytics, working in finance and accounting (F&A) in KPOs or consulting firms, but aspires to move into descriptive or diagnostic or even entry level predictive modeling work. The program will be of great benefit to students who wish to distinguish themselves across a broad range of employment opportunities.

The Post Graduate Program in Data Science, Design and Visualization aims to train students for a successful career in business analytics, across a range of functions. The hands-on program ensures end-to-end, application-oriented learning and execution of concepts essential in the industry.

The student will learn analytical models and methods and tools to get a job in descriptive or diagnostics analytics, across sectors. He/She will also be able to do introductory predictive models for various domains from day one.

Post Graduate Program in Data Science, Design and Visualization Certificate Requirements

To earn a Certificate in Data Science, Design and Visualization

Students must complete four (4) core courses:

  • Database Systems and Technologies (10 wks)
  • Introduction to Data Analytics and R (10 wks)
  • Applied Analytics for Business (8 wks)
  • Data Visualization and Communication (10 wks)

Courses are delivered online with supplemental on-ground, face-to-face weekly sessions. The online content is taught by Northwestern University faculty and includes lecture videos, discussion boards, multimedia exercises, reading and problem-solving activities. The on-ground, face-to-face weekly sessions are facilitated by Bridge faculty and include supplemental lectures, discussions, in-class activities, and designated time to work on group projects.

Database Systems and Tech <> DSDV_IN 101-DL

Database systems are at the core of modern information systems, in this course, students will explore
the principles of data management and data extraction. Database design, modeling, and
implementation concepts will be reviewed and discussed. Students will learn how the different
forms of data such as structured data in SQL databases, and unstructured data in NoSQL database
systems are stored and accessed. Students will also learn how to query a database and extract useful
information to support the decision making process for information design and strategy. The
course has hands-on modules that provide the students with SQL and NoSQL programming skills
in order to extract and process data from a database engine and present the information in forms
suitable for end-users.

Intro to Data Analytics and R <> DSDV_IN 102-DL

This course will introduce to their primary tool R and to the appropriate uses of analytics and its limitations and define how to approach the various stakeholders within an organization with analytic information. Included will be a review of the ethical, regulatory, and compliance issues related to a given business problem and/or solution. Time will be spent interpreting performance-based organizational issues while concurrently identifying solutions for these same performance-based organizational issues. In addition, time will be spent identifying best practices to plan for engaging, implementing, and sustaining organizational change.

Applied Analytics for Business <> DSDV_IN 103-DL

Students learn to apply statistical techniques to the processing and interpretation of data from various industries and disciplines. This course introduces statistical models as they are used in predictive analytics. It addresses issues of statistical model specification and model selection, as well as best practices in developing models for management.

Data Viz and Communication DSDV_IN 104-DL

This course entails learning by doing—working with data and text, utilizing models of text and data, working within an open-source programming environment, and building interactive visualizations for the web. It reviews the psychology of human perception and cognition and best practices in visualization and web design. Assignments involve reviewing and developing interactive visualizations of text, time series, networks, and maps. This is a project-based course with individual and team assignments.
