Author's Note: This story, though totally fiction, was inspired by a gentleman I worked with, who lost the use of his legs in a high school era auto accident. He was very active, went wherever he wanted to, attended sporting events and even drove a motorcycle with a side car. When I asked him why he did not withdraw, be bitter about his injury and essentially give up, his reply was "My friends wouldn't let me."
