Age Ought to Be a Fact

child-labor

In America, one’s age has not always been an indisputable fact. On Thursday, May 19, history professor Susan J. Pearson explores the history of age documentation in America — and how the fight against child labor in the early twentieth-century brought the importance of birth certificates to the forefront at a time when parental testimonial of age resulted in rampant child labor.

Her lecture “Age Ought to Be a Fact: The Campaign Against Child Labor and the Rise of the Birth Certificate in the US” starts at 7:00 pm at the Congdon Schaffer Mansion in Evanston. Refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public, but space is limited. RSVP here.
