Graduate Certificate in Sports Communication

This certificate allows students to explore both sports marketing and online communication strategies across multiple platforms. How do you manage messaging, brand consistency, content curation, fan engagement, etc. through the various online channels that exist today and may emerge tomorrow? Combining courses from the Sports Administration and Information Design & Strategy programs, this certificate is designed for those interested in or already working in communications careers in the multi-faceted sports industry.

About the Graduate Certificate in Sports Communication

Graduate Certificate in Sports Communication Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of the Sports Communication certificate, students will be able to:

  • Gain theoretical and practical knowledge of marketing principles and techniques in sports (MSA 402)
  • Analyze the many facets of the sports marketing industry at the professional, collegiate, and amateur levels, including market research and segmentation, advertising, sponsorship, licensing, and public and media relations (MSA 402)
  • Articulate and evaluate the role of communications in sports management at both the professional and collegiate levels (MSA 411)
  • Practice news release writing, working with various forms of media, pitching stories, conducting interviews (MSA 411)
  • Examine and analyze the impact of new technology on the business of sports, focusing on video distribution, social media, fantasy sports, eSports, data & analytics, stadium technology, digital advertising, among others. (MSA 458)
  • Gain hands-on experience with the latest design frameworks and methodologies that focus on the end user (IDS 401)
  • Plan and execute content that supports an organization’s goals (IDS 407)
  • Implement a social media strategy by effectively identifying, selecting, and sharing best and most relevant online content for target audience (IDS 433)

Sports Communication Curriculum

Students are required to complete the following four courses to earn the certificate:

  • MSA 402 Fundamentals of Sports Marketing
  • MSA 411 Sports Media Relations or MSA 458 Digital Media in Sports
  • IDS 401 User Centered Design or IDS 433 Social Media and Content Curation
  • IDS 407 Information and Content Strategy
