Program Courses

Please note that course schedules may be amended due to low enrollment, faculty availability, and/or other factors.

Online Sync Sessions are an integral part of the online learning experience. Additional information about learning concepts and assignments may be discussed and sync sessions offer valuable opportunities for students to interact with their faculty and peers during the term. We encourage all students to attend live, but if they are unable to, sync sessions will be recorded and posted within Canvas to allow for an asynchronous model of success as well.

MCW 575-DL : The Publishing Industry - Book Publishers and Literary Journals

Writing students are often well read, with a solid understanding of literary tradition, but frequently have limited knowledge of the industry in which they hope to participate. This course will explore both book and literary journal publishing, with an especial focus on the last few decades in the U.S. and the U.K. The industry has weathered widespread changes—not necessarily to the benefit of writers themselves—with, for example, the consolidation of many imprints under one large house or media conglomerate, the advent of the e-book, and the omnipresence of social media. We’ll review the evolution of large and small presses, the effects of Amazon, and the Internet and digital publishing on conventional book industry structures, the roles of review publications and reviewers, among other related topics. We’ll also hear from industry representatives, and you will be required to prepare a presentation on a publishing house from a list provided by the instructor.
