ARABIC 114-0 : Conversation and Culture in the Arab World

Description

These two dialect courses are open to both undergraduate and graduate students, and to students with the basic background in Arabic. They provide an in-depth introduction to conversation and culture in the Arab World with concentration on developing speaking and communication skills in spoken Levantine (course from June 17-July 14) and spoken Egyptian (course from July 15 – August 11) colloquial Arabic.

Recognizing that students may have somewhat different backgrounds, the courses aim to ensure that each student progresses in speaking and comprehension relative to his/her initial level.

Prerequisite: Arabic 111-2 or equivalent; or instructor consent

The main objective of these courses is to help students develop basic skills in the areas of listening and speaking in the Levantine Arabic or Egyptian Arabic. The skills learned will enable students to engage in simple yet useful conversations. The ability to understand and communicate will develop along with increased knowledge of the vocabulary and grammatical structures of the two dialects. Speaking, listening, and reading through multiple media selections, workbook pages, and films on various topics are drawn from different sources. Samples of authentic material in colloquial Arabic are brought in for cultural enrichment and for building strong communication skills. These include class discussion, role-play scenarios, reinforced in-class dialogues, and listening to and comprehension of audio/video selections.

The final grade will be based on the following: attendance and participation, homework assignments, oral presentations, and a final project. Material will be provided electronically by the instructor.

Please note, neither of these courses count toward the WCAS Foreign Language Requirement and they do not replace ARABIC 111-3.
