Strategic Communication Goals and Courses
Program Goals
Strategic Communication Certificate students will:
- Analyze, evaluate, and practice effective persuasive techniques in speaking and writing in varied contexts
- Articulate the foundational behaviors, leadership competencies, and communication skills for sustainable teams
- Explore the intersections and mutual interdependencies of culture and communication
- Critically evaluate how digital media operates in social contexts and one’s own life
Curriculum
Four courses are required:
- COMM ST 205-DL Theories of Persuasion
- COMM ST 225-DL Communication and Culture
- COMM ST 250-DL Team Leadership and Decision Making
- COMM ST 395-DL Topics in Communication Studies: Digital Media and Society

Admission for the Strategic Communication Certificate

Strategic Communication Registration Information
Registration for courses opens 8 to 10 weeks before each quarter and is accessed CAESAR, Northwestern's online student records system. View course registration timelines and instructions on the Registration Information page.
Applying Credit to an Online Bachelor of Science Program
Students interested in the option of applying credit earned in an online undergraduate certificate to an SPS online bachelor's degree program should submit an online application and all required application materials. Students who elect to apply to a bachelor’s degree program before completing the certificate will be able to count completed courses toward the applicable bachelor’s degree, but a certificate will not be conferred.
