Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Health Analytics

The continued explosive growth of health data has created great opportunities to improve the quality and delivery of patient care and a great need for professionals with the knowledge and skills to retrieve, interpret, and act on that data. Occupational data across several job categories show continued projected growth in health analytics-related jobs at anywhere from 10% to nearly 20% over the next 10 years, well above national averages. This certificate of advanced graduate study is designed for those who have already earned a master’s degree in data science or a closely related field and are looking to upskill in areas specific to working with health data. Courses on the American healthcare system and data governance and ethics provide important industry context, familiarizing students with the primary sources of health data generation and the regulations that govern security, storage, and use of that data. Courses in advanced data modeling and feature engineering provide hands-on experience analyzing real health data sets, which are often messy and unstructured.

Like the other data science COAGS, this certificate assumes a master’s degree in data science or closely related field, with strong grounding in statistics, predictive modeling, and proficiency in at least one programming language (R, Python, SQL, etc.).

MSHA 403: Introduction to American Healthcare, Digital Health, and Analytics

MSHA 407: Data Security, Ethics, and Governance

MSHA 411: Advanced Data Modeling for Health Analytics

MSHA 412: Feature Engineering and Text Mining

Please note that courses completed in this certificate program cannot be transferred to the corresponding graduate degree.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of the Health Analytics certificate, students will be able to:

  • Identify the multiple sources of healthcare data generation (e.g., hospitals, payers, patients) and their relationships
  • Understand the specific technical, administrative, and physical considerations for securing and safeguarding health data in accordance with regulatory requirements
  • Consider ethical concerns and dilemmas related to the use and disclosure of health data
  • Use generalized linear models, logistic regression, and other analytics methods to develop and validate predictive models for large health datasets
  • Use R and SQL to develop analytical features from health datasets
  • Extract discrete data elements from free-text clinical documentation for feature development
