The resources include access to an IBM DeveloperWorks IT Professional Community, access to enrollment in the world community grid, lists of real datasets for projects and entrepreneurial ideas, the IBM jobs site for internship and full-time positions globally, ebooks, a list of software available for personal use and more.

IBM DEVELOPERWORKS: Central location for IT Professionals to collaborate with other professionals, engage in forums around common ideas, join communities, download trial code, access journals and redbooks, white papers and more.

IBM JOBS: All IBM jobs are listed in this website, including: full-time, part-time and internship positions. With an advanced search capabilities in the site, you can search for positions locally and globally.

CITY OF CHICAGO DATA PORTAL DATASETS: The City of Chicago has made more than 278 datasets available on topics such as energy, crime, the CTA and more.

IBM GLOBAL ENTERPRENEUR PROGRAM: Access to software, experts, and promotional support for privately held companies in business for less than five years.

UNDERSTANDING BIG DATA eBOOK: Excellent primer on understanding the terms frequently used with big data: big insights, streams, etc.

IBM CENTER FOR APPLIED INSIGHTS: Includes studies around new ideas and technologies — by studying organizations and leaders active in emerging spaces.

HARNESS THE POWER OF BIG DATA eBook: This book is the follow-on read to the ebook Understanding Big Data. It includes additional in-depth technical materials.

CITY FORWARD DATASETS: This is a repository of data from cities around the world. The data comes from vetted sources including the City of Edmonton Traffic and Collision Reports, Australian Bureau of Statistics, Illinois State Police, and the US Census Bureau.

OPEN DATASETS: More than 97,000 datasets in multiple formats including CSV and XLS. It also includes API links for developers.

GETTING STARTED WITH BIG DATA AND BIG INSIGHTS: Repository of resources focused on big data with good introductions, definitions, and the drill down into BigInsights (IBM Enterprise Version of Hadoop). It includes trending data, use cases, text analytics, research view, etc.

WORLD COMMUNITY GRID: The mission is to tackle projects that benefit humanity including Computing for Clean Water, The Clean Energy Project, Discovering Dengue Drugs, Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy, and Help Fight Childhood Cancer.

ANALYTICS ZONE BY IBM: Community for training, software, tutorials, use cases — including fantasy football application software to a food tracker application software.

IBM COGNOS INSIGHT FOR PERSONAL EDITION (Windows OS): The free personal edition of Cognos Insight independently analyzes and visualizes your data, imports data from spreadsheets and comma separated value files (.CSV) for personal, non-commercial use only.

IBM INFOSPHERE BIGINSIGHTS (Linux OS or VMWare Image): InfoSphere BigInsights combines the power of Hadoop with enterprise-grade features including visualization and exploration, advanced analytics, and security and administration. InfoSphere BigInsights Quick Start Edition, the latest edition to the InfoSphere BigInsights family, is a free, downloadable, non-production version.

IBM INFOSPHERE STREAMS (Linux OS or VMWare Image): InfoSphere Streams is an advanced computing platform that can quickly ingest, analyze and correlate information as it arrives from thousands of real-time sources. Because it can handle high throughput rates, InfoSphere Streams can analyze millions of events per second, enabling sub-millisecond response times and instant decision-making. Now you can get your hands on this technology with InfoSphere Streams Quick Start Edition, a free, downloadable, non-production version.

IBM DB2 EXPRESS (Windows, Linux and Mac OS): IBM DB2 Express-C is a no-charge community edition of the DB2 data server. It is ideal for small businesses and multi-branch companies, as well as developers and business partners who serve these clients. DB2 Express-C can be setup quickly, is easy-to-use, and includes self-managing capabilities. It also embodies all of the core features of the more scalable DB2 editions, including Data Studio, Time Travel Query, pureXML and Compression Backup.

IBM WORKLIGHT (Windows, Linux and Mac OS): The IBM Worklight Developer Edition is a self-contained, easy-to-install plugin for the Eclipse IDE. While IBM Worklight Enterprise and Consumer Editions consist of separate development environment and server components, the Developer Edition packages them into a single Eclipse download without the need to install database or application servers. This edition is free for evaluation purposes.

IBM RATIONAL (web access): IBM JazzHub is a collaborative cloud-based software development environment available at no-charge.

IBM Resources for MSIS Faculty

The IBM Academic Initiative is IBM's main vehicle for faculty at accredited institutions around the world to access IBM resources at no-charge with the requirement they are to be used for teaching for degree credit classes and/or non-commercial research purposes. Once faculty become members they have access to the resources and can use them in their curriculum. Resources include: use cases, curriculum with lab exercises, software, ebooks and more. Software is accessed either via cloud or download. Since this is the same software sold to IBM's largest clients and it is not an academic license, only faculty have access so it can be installed on campus lab machines and/or provided to students with the requirement that the software be removed from student machines at the conclusion of their course.  

IBM ACADEMIC INITIATIVE: IBM Academic Initiative is the key IBM location for faculty to have no-charge access to IBM resources. It includes the majority of the IBM software catalogue, remote access to enterprise/power system and courseware.

IBM DIGITAL ANALYTICS: Pilot program with selected universities offering no-charge IBM Digital Analytics SAS formerly Coremetrics.

IBM SMARTER PLANET: Briefs, case studies, white papers, leaders of industry discussions in by topic as well as by industry.

IBM ACADEMIC INITIATIVE – UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS DATASETs: With the IBM Academic Initiative and Walmart, datasets  include: Dillards, Sam’s Club, Tyson’s Food, etc. The data cannot be downloaded per the use rules from providers. Faculty can use DB2 Connect to access.
