The book I’ve been reading that everyone should get their hands on, when it comes out in August 2023, is Jimin Han’s delightful, surprising novel The Apology. The narrator is a cranky centennial! There are family secrets, lots of wonderful comedic passages in a novel that doesn’t shy from darkness or history or death—and for all of that it’s handled with a light touch, a willingness to explore the complicated affiliations that form along bloodlines, generational divides, class, and love. Just a hell of a good read, generous with its ghosts both literal and figurative, told with wit and relish and intelligence.
