LATINO 392-0 : Criminalization of Latinas/os and the Prison
Description
In this course we examine the criminalization and incarceration of Latinas and Latinos within U.S. prison regimes. Central to our readings and discussions is to develop a working understanding of the prison as a mechanism of social control and containment. We ask, “What constitutes the prison?” To answer this question, we examine the prison and its reach as a set of racialized and gendered practices, ideologies, and institutions that render certain bodies vulnerable to state violence. We will trace the proliferation of the prison and the carceral logics that sustain its expansion to discuss how racializing sociopolitical practices are recalibrated to rationalize the confinement of Black and Brown communities. We end the course with discussions on the possibilities of abolitionist praxis.
