The MALS program offers a dynamic curriculum that gives students freedom to choose from a diverse array of courses, allowing them to craft a personalized academic experience. The curriculum also includes applied learning opportunities that bridge the gap between academia and the real world.

Students must complete nine courses to earn the MA in Liberal Studies degree: four core courses, and five elective courses. Core courses include Introduction to Graduate Research and Cultural Analysis, Practicum in Public Humanities, Preparing for Thesis/Capstone Project, and Thesis/Capstone Project. Students may choose electives from a designated list of SPS or TGS courses from a range of humanities disciplines such as philosophy, religion, history, art history, literature, film.

Students also have an opportunity to take one independent study, which will count as elective credit toward their graduate degree. Independent studies are customized courses of study undertaken by a single student under the guidance of an instructor. Students often use these opportunities to springboard into thesis work.
