STAT 202-0 : Introduction to Statistics and Data Science


Description

This course introduces students to the discipline of statistics as a science of understanding and analyzing data. Students will learn the importance of data collection and sampling, methods to analyze data, and how to use data to make inferences and conclusions about real world phenomena. We will introduce the free statistical programming software, Posit Cloud (https://posit.cloud), to process, visualize, and analyze data. We will also utilize a free online textbook, Introduction to Statistics and Data Science (nustat.github.io).

The class will be remote asynchronous instruction, meaning this course is conducted completely online and geared toward independent learners. This is an accelerated version of STAT 202, a typical lesson will include a video to watch, a reading check to complete, followed by a coding activity. While the course material will be delivered asynchronously, students will be required to meet weekly deadlines throughout the 8 weeks of the course.

There will typically be 3-4 lessons due each week, an open-note proficiency exam every 2 weeks, and a final project. The course will have a discussion board where students are encouraged to engage with each other by both asking and answering questions. The instructor will also be actively engaged with the students through the course discussion board and will hold virtual office hours each week.

Prerequisites/Registration Requirements: High School Algebra. No prior coding experience is necessary.
