STAT 210-0 : Introduction to Probability and Statistics


Description

The objective of the course is to help students develop ability for statistical arguments. Topics covered in this course include descriptive statistics, experiment design, correlation and regression, probability distributions, sampling distributions, estimation, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing.

Prerequisites/Registration Requirements: None, however a strong background in high school algebra is recommended (calculus is not required).

Learning Objectives: This course introduces students to probability and statistics. Students will learn how to describe data using graphs and numerical summaries, to analyze data, to make statistical inference, and to interpret the results.

Teaching Method: Remote synchronous meetings with lectures on TWTh from 9am to 11:20pm (central time). Students are welcome to stay online to ask questions right after the lectures or make an appointment to meet at a different time.

Evaluation Method: Homework will be assigned daily. There are two quizzes, one midterm exam and one final exam. All quizzes and exams are open-book and open-notes. HW (10%) + Quiz (20%) + Midterm (30%) + Final (40%).

Required Class Materials: The textbook is Statistics for Business and Economics (Eighth Edition) by Paul Newbold, William L. Carlson, and Betty M. Thorne. We will cover the first 11 chapters from the eighth edition. The ISBN-13 is 978-0132745659. You will also need a calculator for this class. You can use any type of calculator. The price of the 8th edition is about $84.99 for eTextbook, $18.49 – $248.40. Lecture notes and homework solutions will be posted on canvas.
